An undistracted Bala Muhammed, an unstable Yakubu Dogara and a mudslinging Presidency

By Issa Itopa Lucky

Bala Muhammed, the Governor of Bauchi State came under test of will and political maturity recently, firstly from the immediate-past Speaker of the House of Representatives and secondly from the Presidency.

Yakubu Dogara who is currently a serving House of Representatives Member, a seat he won on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has doubtless shown a class of instability of his own; thus far, since his joining politics, he is twice a member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and he is twice a member of the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). According to some quarters, Yakubu Dogara defected to the APC as a first in a series of what to come in the build up to the 2023 Presidential race. According to them, Yakubu Dogara is simply trying to position himself ahead, strategically.

While defecting here and there is within the right to freedom of association and assembly of every and any Nigerian, same as especially any politician, who will usually pitch his/her tent where his/her interest is best secured at a time. This instance of application is worse in Nigeria at a time like this where political ideology is immensely lacking among the political class.

However, it would have been fair of Yakubu Dogara if he had moved to his sudden lost-but-found love, being the APC, quietly without dragging the name of the Governor of his State, Bauchi State, Governor Bala Muhammed, under the guise of the Governor not being fair to “his constituency”. Howbeit, Dogara’s Constituency, the Bogoro/Dass/Tafawa Balewa Federal Constituency of Bauchi State is a Federal Constituency and not a Bauchi “State Constituency”; to this end, it is too bad of Dogara to not have stated exactly which of his “Constituency” he is referring to, as to show if it is the Federal Constituency he was elected to represent or if it is a “personal constituency” of his. If it is a personal constituency, it is therefore understood that he would not be able to explain the constituency concept he meant, in the open, to save his own personal face while holding on to his defection excuse claims against Governor Bala Muhammed.

Anyway, if Dogara indeed has a sincere public interest case as against personal interest case, against Bala Muhammed, the moral burden remains on him to prove even to logical conclusion, else the tongues wagging and pointing observers towards 2023 Presidency are right about Dogara’s move to APC until he is able to prove it otherwise within the good time being.

While that matter was yet to settle as it has to do with Bala Muhammed’s name as Dogara has found need to attach in excuse, the Presidency that is newly in bed with Dogara its returnee-lover, had need to engage in mudslinging with the main opposition PDP, when the party criticized the ruling party, APC, and President Buhari, about their open arms and endorsement of an Ize-Iyamu, the APC candidate for the Edo 2020 governorship election.

How the Presidency found no other response than to shift the goalpost and sling mud in the process and sling it to as far as splashing mud on the good name of Bala Muhammed far away that is busy with governance in his Bauchi State, begs for more answers than the Presidency being the APC at the moment, is giving on paper yet to Nigerians and to the good people of Edo State who have an Ize-Iyamu at the moment that the APC that is supposed to be fighting (prosecuting) and not romancing with, the same man they should be distancing away from, for corruption reason; they are busy all over Edo State with him, telling the people of Edo State that he is their next Governor in September. While political parties are by right, supposed to be campaigning for their candidates for any election, the case of APC and Ize-Iyamu is peculiar, they are supposed to according to their manifesto that brought them into Federal Government in 2015, instead of mudslinging on behalf of, be fighting him for his corruption records rather.

Indeed, the problem-case of APC is more of “the more you look, the less you see”, howbeit, the Presidency as led by “corruption-fighting” APC that is now in endorsement of corrupt figures that come to them for membership and ticket “baptism”, should find more logical ways to give answers and not mudslinging, if for nothing else, for the sake of reducing the feeling of insult suffered daily by those who against all logical odds, voted them into power at first in 2015 to fight corruption and not to come to power and endorse corruption and sling mud when questioned as to what they are up to with members and ticket-holders with corruption records.
